Family History

Sydney Burton was born in Northampton in 1882 to Percy William and Ellen Burton. He had a sister born in 1897 and their father died in Dec 1901 age 40. The following June, a brother, Percy was born. Their mother, being a widow, remarried in 1904 to Ernest Callow in Northampton. Sometime between this event and the war, the family moved and by the time Sydney was killed, his mother and stepfather were living in Ranskill and his brother and sister were resident at Scrooby House.

Military History

Sydney Burton was attested at Sheffield on the 24th September 1914, giving his address as Scrooby House, Bawtry and occupation as farmer. He was sent to France on the 15th April 1915 and landed at Le Harve. Whilst fighting, he was killed in action and buried in the Hebuterne Military Cemetery, France.
