No sooner had the war started than Arthur Smith went to Retford to join the Sherwood Foresters 16th Battalion. He was one of four children born to Frank and Alice Smith, living at Ranskill. Arthur would have been 30 years old on enlistment.

Military History

Arthur survived 3years and four months of war before being reported missing. His official date of being killed in action was 21 March 1918. His name is inscribed on the Pozieres Memorial, France. His parents were recorded as living at Temperance Hall Yard, Ranskill after his death.
