By 1901 the family had moved to Ranskill where Arthur was working as a shepherd boy with his father. In 1909 he married a local Ranskill girl called Annie Chapple and changed careers by working as a railway platelayer and living with his wife and in-laws. Before WW1 came, they had had three children.

Military History

Time came when he joined the army and enlisted at Retford. He became Sapper WR/277832 of the Royal Engineers 109th Railway Troops Coy. It appears his civilian occupation on the railway had put him to good use in the 109th Railway Troops Coy.
