Edgar Bray was born in 1892 at Sutton Cum Lound to the local long term police constable of Sutton, William Bray and his wife, Annie Bray néé Poynton of the Police Station, Sutton cum Lound. His father William was born in 1859 at Graveley, Hertfordshire and his mother Annie Poynton was born in 1866 at Bangor, Flinthsire, they were married on 16th November 1882 at the parish church at Ollerton and went on to have 11 children, sadly 6 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their surviving children were William b1883 Ollerton, Arthur John b1884 Little Wymondley, Hertfordshire, Herbert Fred b1887 South Clifton, Edgar b1892 South Clifton Lewis Jones b1893 South Clifton Dora b1896 Sutton Cum Lound and Winifred b1900 Sutton cum Lound. In the 1911 census the family are living at the Police House, Sutton cum Lound and are shown as William Bray 52 yrs a police constable, he is living with his wife Annie 45 yrs and their children, Edgar 19 yrs a shafter tool maker, Lewis Jones 17 yrs a cowman o a farm, Dora 15 yrs a drapers apprentice and Winifred 11 yrs a scholar. Edgar married his wife Beatrice Ellen Taylor in 1914 their marriage was recorded in the East Retford registration district.
He joined the army on the 20th November 1915 (regiment unknown). After 56 days on home service he was discharged disabled (26/12/1916). He was awarded a Silver War Badge (99666). His life ended less than five years later and although his name was recorded on the Ranskill memorial, his body was buried at the village of nearby Sutton the cause of his death was Pulmonary tuberculosis (Pension record card.)
