Family History

Charles William Powell was born in 1899 at Farnsfield and was the son of a Charles a waggoner on a farm and Sarah Powell née Peacock, of Combs Cottage, Farnsfield. His father Charles was born in 1875 at Farnsfield and his mother Sarah Peacock was born in 1878 also at Farnsfield, they were married in 1899 their marriage was recorded in the Southwell Registration district and went on to have the following children, Charles William b1899, Robert Baden b1902, Samuel Hector b1905, Rose Annie b1908 and Doris Winifred b1910 all were born at Farnsfield. In the 1911 census the family are living at Comb Cottage, Farnsfield and are shown as Charles 36 yrs a waggoner on a farm, he is living with his wife Sarah 33 yrs and their children, Charles William 12 yrs a scholar, Robert Baden 9 yrs a scholar, Samuel Hector 6 yrs Rose Annie 3 yrs and Doris Winifred 1 year of age.

Military History

Private Charles William Powell was called up for service on 30th April 1917 at Mansfield, he was 18 yrs and 33 days old, he lived at Combs Cottage, Farnsfield and was a carter working for the Co operative society. He was posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment with the service number 85177., He was transferred to the West Yorkshire Regiment on 5th April 1918 and landed in France on 17th April 1918 , he was serving with 'B' Coy 15th battalion West Yorkshire Regiment when he was wounded in action and admitted to a casualty clearing station with a gun shot wound to the head on 8th June 1918. He died of his wounds on 4th July 1918 and is buried at Longueness (St. Omer) Souvenir Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France.
