Family History

William Baker (junior) was born on 23rd February 1896 in Rampton was the son of William Baker (senior) a market gardener and Ann Baker (nee Cook ). William Barker (senior) was born in 1860 at Laneham, Ann Cook was born in 1859 at Washingborough, Lincolnshire, they were married in 1884 their marriage was registered in the Lincoln registration district, they went on to have 7 children. In the 1911 census the family are living at Treswell Road, Rampton , William (senior) 51yrs and is a market gardener, he is living with his wife Ann 52 yrs and 5 of their children including William is 16 yrs of age and is single ,his occupation is that of market gardener. On 12th December 1917 he marries Mable Pedley at Bierley Register office. They had a son Ronald born on 31st March 1918 in the Bradford Registration district .

Military History

Rifleman William Baker enlisted on 27th May 1915 at Retford, giving his age as 20 yrs and 3 months and his occupation as a newsagent, his next of kin was his father William who lived at Rampton. He was posted to the Kings Royal Rifle Corps, He embarked on 30th September 1915 landing in France the following day. On 1st September 1916 he was returned to England, and after appearing before a medical board he was found to be unfit for further military service due to heart problems and on 15th September 1916 he was discharged from the Army. He was issued with silver badge number 216222. Two years later on 9th September 1918 he died at home in Rampton. He was buried on 11th September 1918 at All Saints Church Rampton
