Family History

George was born in 1898 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, the son of Thomas Henry and Elizabeth Wilson. In 1901 Thomas, a butcher, and his wife together with their two sons, George (3) and Reginald (1) were living at 15 Percy Street, Cardiff. George's father, Thomas Henry, had been born in Ragnall, the oldest of at least six children born to George and Frances Wilson; Thomas Henry, George, James, Frederick William, Florence and Sarah Jane. George senior was a baker and grocer who appears to have lived all his life in the village of Ragnall although he moved house several times as shown on the census records. Thomas Henry was living at home in Ragnall at the time of the 1881 census but was not in the household on the night of the census ten years later. By 1901 he was married and living with his family in Cardiff (his wife Elizabeth had been born in Pontypridd, Glamorgan). However, by 1911 his eldest son, George, who was recorded on the 1901 census with his parents in Cardiff, was living with his widowed grandfather in Ragnall along with his unmarried paternal uncle and aunts; George (37) who was a grocer and baker, Florence (33), a professional nurse, and Sarah Jane (27). No occupation was given for Sarah Jane but as her mother, Frances, had died on 16 May 1905 at the age of 57, Sarah may have been managing the household for the family. George Wilson senior died on 12 January 1922 at the age of 80. George and Frances are buried alongside their grandson in Ragnall churchyard.

Military History

3/1st Lincolnshire Yeomanry: the 3rd Line regiment was formed in 1915. The regiment remained in the UK until early in 1917 when it was absorbed into the 1st Reserve Cavalry Regiment. George's military record has been traced through the 'Silver Badge' record (badge number 194742). He enlisted on 26 October 1915 and did not serve overseas. George was discharged less than a year later on 26 September 1916 because of sickness ('para 392 XVI') and he died the following year.
