Extra Information

L/Cpl Hayes Retford Times 24 Nov 1916 Mrs Hayes of Ragnall has received the sad news that her son, Lance-Corpl Hayes of the Lincolns has been killed in action. Second Lieut E W Milford has written to her in the following sympathetic strain:- “With great regret I write to offer you my deepest sympathy in the death of your son, Lance-Corpl Hayes. He was an extremely nice fellow, loved by everyone. I thought an immense amount of him and would trust him anywhere. He could always be relied upon to do his duty. He was killed with a piece of shell which entered his liver on the morning of Nov 3rd. He died within five minuets, passing away very peacefully. In conclusion might I offer you the deepest sympathy of the officers and men of his company.” Sgt Bagley has also written a letter of sympathy eulogising deceased’s fine qualities.
