Charles was born in 1893 in Kealby, Lincolnshire the son of Frederick a stockman on a cattle farm and Mary Ann Couling, née Wilkinson of Risby, Kealby, Lincoln. Frederick was born in 1868 at South Kyme, Mary Ann Wilkinson was born in 1870 at Donnington, they were married in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the Sleaford registration district, they went on to have 10 children. In 1911 his parents are siblings are living at Ragnall Frederick 43 yrs is a shepherd, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 41 yrs and their children, Mary 13, William 9 yrs Arthur 6 yrs, Edgar 5 yrs Fred 3 yrs and Edith 1 month old.

Military History

Private Charles Couling enlisted at Worksop he served with the 7th battalion Lincolnshire regiment. His medal index card shows he first entered the Western Front in France on 28th July 1915 and that he was entitled to the 1915 Star, Victory and British medals. He was killed in action on 15th February 1916, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Menin Gate Ypres, Belgium.
