Alan Christopher Grounds was the only child of Richard and Elizabeth Grounds (nee Terry).He was born at Burghwallis near Doncaster in 1896. When he was 14, the family was living in Oldcotes where Alan was serving an apprenticeship as a joiner.
He enlisted early in the war at Doncaster in the Yorkshire Light Infantry number 19700. He later transferred to Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment) 6th Bn. He served at Gallipoli where he contracted an illness and was evacuated to the hospital at Malta, where he died on the 7th December 1915. Buried Pieta Military Cemetery, Malta. Pte Alan Grounds Retford Times 31 Dec 1915 The death is announced of Private Allan Grounds, of the Yorkshire Regiment (the Green Howards), who passed away in a Military Hospital at Malta. He was 20 years of age, and prior to enlistment a year ago was working in the Great Northern Railway sheds. A memorial service was held at Oldcotes Church by the Rev F d’Arblay Burney, Harworth, and at the concusion the “Last Post” was sounded. The deceased soldier was formerly organist at Oldcotes Church.
