Joseph was born in 1898 the son of of Arthur a farm labourer and Elizabeth Fullard (née Richardson ) of North Wheatley Retford. He had two sisters May and Ivy and a brother Ernest. In 1901 the family was living in the cottages on High Street Sutton on Trent and by 1911 had moved to East Markham.
He enlisted in Retford in January 1917 and went to France in July 1917. He originally served (75640) in the Lincolnshire Regiment before transferring to the Royal Fusiliers . He was badly wounded by shrapnel on 18th October 1917 and died from these wounds. Zuydcoote Military Cemetery Grave Reference: 2 A 1
Retford Times 16th November 1917 'Private Joseph Fullard Wheatley Youth Falls Another brave lad from North Wheatley Pte Joseph Fullard, Royal Fusiliers has fallen in the great War. He joined the colours in January last and went to France in July. He had been twice wounded, and was in a Canadian hospital for a month. He went back into the lines and was badly wounded by shrapnel on October 18th, and died at a casualty clearing station. he was in his 20th year. he spent his last six years in farm service with Mr and Mrs Jackson, Laneham who speak in high terms of his work and character. The deceased was the son of Mr and Mrs Arthur Fullard , North Wheatley and nephew of Mr and Mrs Fullard , Little Gringley, whose son Arthur was killed in France in September last.'
