Walter Challand

Walter was the son of Harry and Ann Challand. He was one of at least seven children: Elsie, Bertha (birth registered 1880, J/F/M Southwell), Ellen, John Henry (birth registered 1885, J/F/M Southwell), James (birth registered 1887, J/F/M Southwell), Kate and Walter. All the family were born in Farnsfield, near Southwell, Nottinghamshire, and Ann and Harry appear to have lived in Farnsfield all their lives. In 1881 Harry (27), a pot maker, and Ann (29), a dressmaker, were living in Farnsfield. Of their two daughters, Elsie and Bertha, only Bertha (1) was in the home on the night of the census. They were living on Main Street, Farnsfield, in 1891 with their five children Elsie (12), Bertha (10), Ellen (8), John Henry (6) and James (4). Also in the household was Harry's brother-in-law, Walter Cottam (24) a farm labourer. By 1901 Harry (47) and Ann (38) were at Principal Street, Farnsfield, with four of their children: John (16) a grocer's apprentice, James (14), Kate (9) and Walter (7). On the night of the census, two of their four daughters, Elsie (23) and Bertha (21) were in Cromwell, Nottinghamshire, in the household of their maternal uncle, William Cottam (40), a farmer, along with William's brother, Walter (33) a horseman on a farm. Neither of the women is listed with an occupation. Ann Challand probably died a few years later (death possibly 1902, J/F/M Southwell). Only four children were still in the family home with their widowed father on the night of the 1911 Census: Bertha (31), John Henry (27) a grocer's assistant, James (25) a blacksmith and Walter (17) a farm labourer. Harry Challand died aged 69 in 1924 (March, Southwell), Bertha at the age of 46 in 1926 (December, Southwell), James aged 53 in 1940 (June, Southwell) and John aged 68 in 1953 (December, Southwell).
