Thomas White, a native of Retford, and Lucy Cook married at Retford in 1874. Thomas was an agricultural labourer and produced nine children between 1876 and 1889 but by 1911 only six had survived. The family lived first at Spital Hill and later at 22 Poplar Street in Retford, all being born in Retford. The youngest of their children was George White who was born in 1889, who in 1911, was working as a labourer in the sheds of the Great Northern Railway Company. He married in 1915 to Lilian Stimson from Headon. They probably settled there as on the 25th September they had a boy born to them in Headon, who they named George.
George first enlisted in the Sherwood Foresters (Notts and Derby Regiment) 10th Bn, regimental number 14379. He was later transferred to the Labour Corps, number 467012. He went to France on the 14th July 1915 and earned the 1915 Star. There are no known records as to his circumstances of death other than he died in the Lincoln War Hospital in the UK and was buried in Headon (St Peter) Churchyard, the parish of his wife and child.
