Family History

This Jackson family consisted of parents, George and Mary, née Chappell (married 1876), children Elizabeth born 1879, Helen 1881, Annie 1883, Louisa 1885, John T 1888, George 1890, Joseph 1892, Samuel 1894, Frank 1896, Ivy 1898 and Lily born 1900. The family moved around the Retford area where they mainly worked as agricultural workers. The children’s birth locations were spread out between, Everton, Scafworth, Headon, Upton, Mattersey and Grove, Nottinghamshire. In 1911, Samuel Jackson (born Mattersey) was still living with his parents at Grove, Retford and working as a agricultural labourer.

Military History

He enlisted at Sheffield and went to France on 13th July 1915. He died of wounds sustained and was buried at Boulogne Eastern Cemetery (grave ref 8.A.111), He was also named in commemoration on the family grave headstone in Headon Churchyard.

CWG additional information:- He was the son of George and Mary Jackson of Upton, Retford, Notts. Inscription on family headstone, Headen (St Peter) churchyard: '(Joseph Jackson, died 1916) Also of Corpl. Samuel Jackson killed in action in France May 12th 1916 aged 22 years.' The headstone also commemorates Samuel and Helen's grandmother, Hannah Jackson, who died 18 March 1914 and married sister, Helen Collinge, who died 3 March 1908.
