Military History

Frederick joined the Notts and Derby Regt (number 40665) in 1916 before being transferred to the Cameronians. Named on the Arras Memorial Pte Frederick Makins Worksop Guardian 4 May 1917 The dark shadow cast by the war falls over village as well as every town. No place is immune for town and village alike have given their sons in answer to the Empire’s call. The village of Harworth is called upon to sympathies with the respected resident, Mrs Makins and family in the loss of her eldest son, Pte Frederick Makins of the Scottish Rifles, who was killed in action in France on April 14th. News of his death was received on Friday and as the intelligence became known, Mrs Makins became the recipient of the sympathy of the parishioners. Born in Harworth until he joined the Army last year, the whole of the deceased soldier’s life had been spent in the Parish. For several years he had acted as gardener to the Vicar, only leaving when he enlisted. He was a quiet steady young fellow and used to be a regular bell ringer. About Xmas he got a few days leave at home and then left for France, the grave of so many of our dearest and best. His last letter was written to his mother on April *. On the next day he was called to make the great sacrifice.
