John Percival Tennison Ashbridge was born in 1891 at Beverly, Yorkshire, the son of John and Elizabeth A Ashbridge, nee Pinching, from a family of 6. His father died in 1884 in Beverley and his mother remarried 2 years later to Matthew Baildon in Beverley. By 1911, Percival had left the family home, and his mother and stepfather were living in Harworth. His elder brother, Walter, was a prisoner of war, interned in Germany.
John P T Ashbridge joined up in the early war days and seems to have dropped his first Christian name of John and is referred to as Percival Ashbridge on his service documents. His medal index card, indicates that he was first in the Balkan campaign before being sent to France where he was killed and remembered on the Thiepval Memorial. His elder brother, Walter, was a prisoner of war interned in Germany.
