Family History

George Carnall was a native of Gamston and was the local postman , his wife Hannah was the local postmistress and they have a family of six children .Their son Joseph was born in 1895 at Gamston . In the 1911 census the family is living at Gamston with their children , Mary - Nellie - Bertha - Alice and George, however Joseph is not at the address on the night of the census as he has left home and is a servant on a farm at South Leverton, where he is shown to be 16 years of age and working on a farm worked by the farmer John Barthorpe. His father George died in March 1916 and Joseph joined up the following month.

Military History

Joseph enlisted at Retford on 29th April 1916 and gave his place of birth as Gamston. he served in the 1st battalion The Prince of Wales's ( North Staffordshire Regiment ) and was killed in action on 21st March 1918, he has no known grave and his name is commemorated on the Pozieres Memorial, Somme, France.

Pte Joseph Carnell Retford Times 10th May 1918 A Gamston Soldier Pte Joseph Carnell, North Staffs, whose photo we reproduce above was killed in action in France on March 28th. He was the elder son of Mrs Carnell and of the late Mr Geo. Carnell, Gamston Post Office and joined the Army on April 29th 1916, a month after the death of his father. He was in farm service at Treswell and South Leverton and four years with Mr Geo. Small at Headon cum Upton. The deceased was 23 years of age.
