Broughton Hill was the second eldest with 2 brothers and 3 sisters, to George and Edith Elzia Hill, née White. By the time Broughton was 17, the family had moved to Firbeck and he was working on his father's farm.
Broughton Hill joined the Coldstream Guards on 4th Sept 1914 and served in France during the Great War. Taken prisoner at La’Bassee, he was then moved to Menesburg Internment camp, Germany, where he worked in salt mine until his death in 1916. He was engaged to Margaret Meredith whose father was Head Gardener at Firbeck Hall. Following Broughton’s death, Margaret wrote that “the sum of £13 was collected of the prison camp for a headstone to mark his grave”. Broughton is buried in Ober Roblingen, near Halle, Saxony. His medals were presented to St Martins by his nieces, Rosemary and Serena Hill Pte. Broughton Hill Worksop Guardian 15 December 1916 A memorial service was held on Tuesday evening in Firbeck Church in Commemoration of Pte. Broughton Hill, of the Coldstream Guards. He was the second of the three sons of Mr. and .Mrs. Hill, of Yew Tree Farm, Firbeck, who all three early responded to their country’s call. Private Broughton Hill joined the Forces on, September 5th, 1914. He was taken prisoner at La Bassee, and had been in Menesburg internment camp, Germany, ever since. Hid death is supposed to have taken place on November 7th, and occurred through a fall of rock salt in the mine in which he was working. He was 22 years of age and was much respected in the district. The Church was well filled by friends and relatives of the family, amongst whom were Mr. and Mrs. G.Hill, Private Dick Hill(Royal Horse Guards), Misses Hill and Miss Meredith, his fiancée. Private Raymond Hill was unable to be present being abroad.
