Family History

Walter was born in 1897 in Everton and was the son of John a bricklayer and Margaret Ann Long. (nee Kirk ) John and Margaret had eight children in total sadly three died in infancy. In the 1911 census the family are living at Everton , Walter is 14 years of age single and a farm labourer, also at the address are his parents and his elder brother John William , 27 years and his wife Ellena (sic) and their 3 children Edith,Winifred and Doris. Three other siblings Edith - George and Frederick are not at the address. He married his wife Gertrude Baker at the local parish church in Withernsea on 24th July 1917 .

Military History

Walter enlisted at Hull on 19th April 1915, he gave his place of birth as Everton and that he was a labourer and was 19 years and three months of age, his next of kin is given as his wife Gertrude who was living at Hayton Road, Retford. he underwent training and on 11th December 1915 embarked from Devonport to join the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force arriving at Alexandria. He was wounded with shrapnel in his fingers and returned home to be treated in hospital between 9th and 31st May 1917 after which he recovered at home . During this period he married his wife Gertrude. On 27th July 1917 he went to France to join the British Expeditionary Force where he served until he was once again wounded with gun shot wounds to his lungs , he never recovered from these wounds and died on 30th March 1918

He is commemorated on a special memorial at Rumaucourt Communal Cemetery, pas de Calais , France.
