Family History

William Henry Cousins was born in 1883 at Walkeringham and was the son of William a pantile maker and his first wife the late Sarah Cousins née Spencer of Everton, Nottinghamshire. His father William was born in 1860 at Walkeringham, his mother Sarah Spencer was born in 1860, she died in 1889 aged 29 yrs, they were married on 21st April 1881 at Walkeringham parish church, they went on to have the following children, Frederick Robert b1881, William Henry b1883, Eveline b1884, Albert b1885 all were born at Walkeringham. His father went to re marry Hannah Porter (born 1860 Saundby) in 1892 their marriage was recorded in the East Retford registration district, they went on to have Etta b1892 and Joseph b1894 both born at Everton. In the 1911 census the family are living at Everton village and are shown as William 51 yrs a general labourer he is living with is wife Anna 51 yrs and their children, Joe 17 yrs a baker and Etta 19 yrs no occupation listed. In the same 1911 census William has left the family home, he is living at 36 Spring Gardens, Doncaster, he is shown as being 27 yrs a wireman single, he is living with Maria Batty 57 yrs a widow. William Henry married his wife Lois Applewhite (born 9th January 1894) in 1914 their marriage was recorded in the Lincoln registration district, they lived at 5 Church Street, Lincoln and went on to have a son Harry born 5th November 1914. Following his death his widow Lois was awarded a pension of 15 shillings and 6 pence which commenced on 7th June 1915.

Military History

Corporal William Henry Cousins originally enlisted on 17th November 1902 at Doncaster, he served with the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, he was killed in action on 28th October 1914 having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Le Touret Memorial, France.
