Thomas Bowns was born in Elkesley, Notts in 1882. According to the census he had four siblings, George born 1871, John 1879, James 1884 and Harry born 1892, but all was not as it seems. Their mother, Hannah Bowns, over a period of three decades was recorded as single in each census. Each child had been born in Elkesley and by 1911, Thomas was the only one left living with his mother in Elkesley, working as a general labourer for the District Council.
