John Albert Tinlin was born in 1895 at Kirkwhelpington, Northumberland. His mother was Ann Tinlin and in 1901 both she and John were living with her parents, William and Ann Tinlin at Cliffside Kirkwhelpington, where Ann was employed as a general domestic servant. In the year 1910, she married Edmund Henry Thew, of Kirkwhelpington, registered at Bellingham, Northumberland. The following year, 1911, the couple had moved and were living in Clayworth where Edmund was employed as an estate woodman. Ann’s son, John Albert Tinlin was also resident with them (although described as a boarder) who was employed as a ‘groom in hunting stables’. After the death of John Albert, his mother is recorded as returning to Northumberland.
He enlisted at Doncaster and was drafted to France on the 28th April 1915 where he died of wounds received and was buried in the Dickebusch New Military, Belgium. He was awarded the 1915 Star, British and Victory Medal.
