Family History

Sam had 2 brothers and 6 sisters and was the son of Samuel and Hannah Parker of 15 Low Street, Carlton. When he was 18, he was living and working as a farm servant at New Buildings, Styrupp, Rotherham. 3 months after enlisting on the 18th March 1915 he was on his way to France, where, on the 9th of May of that year, he was killed in action.

Military History

On the 4th Aug 1914, Great Britain declared war on Germany. 24 days later, 21 year old Sam Parker of Carlton in Lindrick was attested at Worksop. He must have tried to join the army at an earlier stage as he had declared previously of been rejected from military service due to a damaged index finger but was passed fit on this occasion. He received posthumously, 3 medals, 1915 Star, the war and victory Medal. He is commemorated on the:- Ploegsteert, Memorial Belgium

An article in the Retford Times reads;- Pte Sam Parker Retford Times 24/09/15 Carlton lad Killed Pte Sam Parker of Low Street, Carlton , who was reported as missing has now been reported as having been killed on May 9th. This brave Carlton lad had enlisted in the 1st Sherwood Foresters and was invalided home home in January with frost bitten feet, he returned to France at the end of February. Prior to enlisting he was employed by Mr Dearnaley, Woodsetts, Worksop and Mr Rose Linderick Common. His parents Mr and Mrs Parker have two other sons serving with the colours , and news has been received that Pte J Wm Parker has been wounded while with the Leicestershire Regt. He is now in hospital in Ipswich and is shortly coming home on leave. The other son is Pte George Parker who is now with the Sherwood Foresters Research by Colin Dannatt
