Family History

John Thomas Barker Mellars, of Carlton in Lindrick, and Sarah Louisa Southgate married early in the year of 1894. By the end of the year, their first child, John William was born and baptised on the 16th Dec 1894 in St John’s church, Carlton. The couple had two more daughters, Ethel and Annie, by the end of 1899, Shortly after the last birth, Sarah Louisa died in 1900. The remainder of the children’s childhood was spent with their grandparents house and large family in Carlton. John William joined the army when aged 24.

Military History

Pte J W Mellars Worksop Guardian 15 November 1918 Another Carlton lad to lose his life in the great war is Pte J W Mellars who died in hospital in France from wounds received on October 25th. The poor fellow only survived his injuries a few hours. He resided at Water lane, Carlton and before enlisting was employed at the Misses Mellars farm, North Carlton. He joined the colours on May 23rd and was sent to France on October 11th last. He was well known and highly respected in Carlton where the news of his death was received with great regret. Much sympathy is expressed with his relatives
