Military History

Pte (F or) George Hazlehurst Worksop Guardian 18 October 1918 Carlton in Lindrick, in common with other places, has lost a number of its young men by the war, and official news ha been received this week of the death in action of Pte (F) George Hazlehurst, Sherwood Foresters, third son of Mr and Mrs Hazlehurst, Carlton. The young man was only 19 years of age and was well known to all in the village. He joined up on April 23rd this year, before which time he worked at Shireoaks Colliery. He was sent to France in early August and was soon in the fighting line, as he was killed in action on September 18th. His parents heard last week through Pte Moore, that he had fallen and now they have their worst fears confirmed. No further particulars are to hand, but we may be sure young Hazlehurst died doing his duty manfully and bravely. His brother, Sergt Charles Hazlehurst, enlisted in the Sherwood Rangers Yeomanry at the outbreak of war and was later transferred to the machine gun section, and he is now on service in the Holy Land. Carlton people will hear with great regret of Pte Hazlehurst’s death and much sympathy is expressed with the parents.
