Arthur was born in 1899 in Blankney,Lincolnshire the son of Henry James an agricultural labourer and Annie Elizabeth Andrews (nee Baker) of Trent Port Cottage, Gainsborough. In the 1911 census the family are living in the village of Newton on Trent near Newark, at this time Arthur is 12 years of age and a scholar, he has 5 siblings
Arthur enlisted in Lincoln and served with the 1st battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment until he died on 2/3rd November 1918.He is buried in St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen, France
