Edward was born in 1897 at Austerfield the son of George, a labourer in a sand quarry and roadman, and Mary. He had three siblings and the family lived in Austerfield. In 1911 he is living with Frederick Wilson and his family, also in Austerfield, at this time he is 14 yrs of age and a servant (cow boy) .
He joined up at Pontefract on 27th May 1918 at the age of 21 years. He initially served with the West Riding Regiment with service number 52151 but later transferred to the 1st Battalion (C Coy). King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry. He was killed in action by a bursting shell at Semousies in France days before the Armistice and he was buried with full military honours in Dourlers Communal Cemetery Extension (grave ref. I.C.8). A letter sent from the commanding officer to Edward's mother stated that, 'He was one of the bravest lads that it had been his privilege to meet.' Grave Reference: I. C. 8. Cemetery:
