Family History

Sydney was born in 1895 at Staniforth and was the son of George Edwin a colliery blacksmith and May Schofield, of Austerfield, Bawtry, George and may had six children but only five survived one dying in infancy, they were Gladys, Phylis, Ivy, Eleanor Victoria , Winifred May and Sydney George . In the 1911 census the family are living at Nancy Cottages, Chapeltown, Sheffield Sydney is 16 years of age and working at the colliery. He was single prior to his enlistment.

Military History

Sydney enlisted immediately on the declaration of war on the 18th August 1914 at Sheffield. Following training at York he went his battalion to France. He was killed in action on 5th May 1915 and his body was never recovered or identified and his name is commemorated on the Ypres, menin Gate memorial.
