Family History

Joseph was born at Bawtry in 1882 the eldest son of Joseph and Ann Lane, of High St., Bawtry; husband of Annie Lane, of The Lawns, High St., Bawtry, Yorks. At the outbreak of the war he managed his late fathers business of draper and general dealer in the High Street, Bawtry.In the 1911 census he is shown as being 29 years of age and a drapers assistant , he is living with his wife Annie from Misson and their 2 children Jospeh born 1909 and Gwendoline Mary born 1910 both born in Bawtry. He was married and left a widow and 3 children

Military History

he had previously been a Corporal in the Bawtry detachment of the 3rd Volunteer battalion of the King's Yorkshire Light Infantry where he gained the respect and esteem of his commanding officer and all ranks by his zeal and military efficiency. For some time after the war broke out he was the only one of his family to carry on the family business. He was called up into the Army in 1917 and after completing his training went to France and fought with his battalion in many engagements. he was first reported missing after action on 20th March 1918 and was never heard of again. Eventually he was officially reported killed in action on that date.
