Family History

Joseph was born in 1894 at Bawtry the son of Frank a seed merchant and his wife Annie Jackson of Bawtry, Yorks. In the 1911 census he is 17 years of age and still at school he has 7 siblings and living at High Street Bawtry.

Military History

He joined the army in Sheffield in April 1917 at this time being a motor engineer. After his training at Clipstone camp with the 4th reserve battalion of the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry he was transferred to the 12th Battalion. He joined the battalion in France and fought in and around Ypres. He was laid up with 'trench foot' and went into hospital and on recovery and following a machine gun course transferred to the 5th battalion KOYLI, he was killed in action on 2nd June 1918 aged 24 years.
