Family History

William was born in 1895 one of eight children born to George a farm labourer and Emily Bennett. In 1911 he was living at Austerfield with his parents and sister Hilda Bennett. William was married and had one child.

Military History

Bennett enlisted at Tackgate Rotherham on 23rd May 1917. His initial training took place at West Hartlepool and he arrived in France on 4th August 1917. It was during the German offensive launched on 23rd May 1918 that he was killed. The following is from a letter received by his wife from the battalion's chaplain :- Dear Mrs Bennett, You will have heard the sad news of the death of your husband and I write you a word of deepest sympathy in your sorrow, he was shot through the head by a sniper and died instantly. He will be much missed by his many friends who deeply regret his loss. He was a splendid character and always did his duty well. He was buried in the military cemetery where his grave will be looked after and a cross erected. His personal belongings will be sent to you later. May God be with you in your sorrow.
