Family History

Frederick was born in 1896 in Long Eaton, Derbyshire the son of Henry and Elizabeth Bailey of 21 Upper Wellington Street, Long Eaton, Derbyshire. The 1911 Census shows him living with his parents at 21 Upper Wellington Street, Long Eaton his father being Henry a railway goods guard and his mother Elizabeth Alice, he was born in 1896 and was born in Long Eaton. Prior to joining up he had lived with his brother Tom Bailey in South Parade Bawtry and was working on the shaft being sunk for the new Harworth Colliery

Military History

Fred enlisted at Pontefract on 14th September 1914 into 10th battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry,He was killed in action at Loos 26/27th September 1915. On October 19th his parents were officially informed their son had been wounded, subsequently he was reported missing and eventually killed in action on 27th September 1915. That this brave boy enlisted so early in the war from a stern sense of duty was shown by the answer he gave to his mother’s inquiry as to why he had enlisted, he wrote ‘ I have enlisted in order to help and protect you and other boy’s mothers and little children like my sister’ Pte H Bailey Retford Times 31 Dec 1915 News has been received that Pte H Bailey, who was employed at Bawtry when hostilities commenced, was killed in action on Sept 27. In an official notification dated Oct 19, the parents who reside at Long Eaton, were informed that their son had been wounded. In a subsequent notification dated Nov 6, it was stated that Pte Bailey was missing. More recently however, the parents received the sad information that he has been killed..
