Family History

Frederick William Hazelgrove was born in 1884 at Little Eaton, Derbyshire and was the son of the late Robert a stationary engine driver and Mary Catherine Hazelgrove née Locker. His father Robert was born in 1845 at Hurstpierpoint, Sussex , he died in 1911 at Trowell, Nottinghamshire he was 66 yrs old, his mother Mary Catherine Locker was born in 1849, she died in 1886 aged 37 yrs, they were married on 12th January 1874 at St Peters Church, Derby, they went on to have the following children, Annie Augusta b 1877 Shardlow, Percy Charles b1879 Shardlow, Constance Jane b1879 Shardlow, Robert Henry b1882 Little Eaton and Frederick William b1884 Little Eaton. Frederick William Hazelgrove married Emma Hawley (born 18th January 1883) in 1908, their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration district, they lived at Trowell Cottage, Trowell and had a daughter Hilda born 30th June 1912. In the 1911 census Frederick is living at Trowell Forge, Trowell, he is shown as being 26 yrs of age an iron pipe fitter, he is living with his wife Emma 28 yrs and his widowed father Robert 66 yrs a stationary engine driver. Following his death his widow Emma was awarded a pension of 15 shillings a week which commenced on 13th March 1916.

Military History

Lance Corporal Frederick William Hazelgrove enlisted on 3rd February 1903 at Nottingham, he was 18 yrs and 7 months of age a collier and was living at Trowell, Nottingham, he signed on for 3 yrs with the colours and 9 years in the reserves. He was posted to Durham Light Infantry, he went out to India on 17th December 1904 until 19th February 1906 when he returned home and on 21st February 1906 was posted to the reserves, time served. On 5th August 1914 he was mobilised for war and on 24th June 1915 was promoted to Lance Corporal. He landed in France on 8th September 1914 and was killed in action on 9th October 1915. Having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres Menin Gate Memorial, he had served with the army for 12 yrs and 188 days.
