He was the son of Louisa Parker brought up by his grandparents George Thompson Parker and Elizabeth Parker. George was a Greasley shepherd in 1901 and a brewery worker living on Watnall Road Kimberley in 1911. George was from Threekingham Lincolnshire and Elizabeth was born at Bradmore Nottinghamshire. Louisa was also born at Bradmore in 1875. It appears George and Elizabeth adopted John William at or shortly after his birth and they became his legatees receiving £14/19/9d from the army 8/12/1920.
(Frontiersmen) attached 1/2nd Bn African Rifles His date of enlistment is unknown but he entered theatre (Kilindini Harbour Mombassa - Kenya) 4/5/1915 having sailed from Devonport via Gibralta, Malta, Port Said, Port Suez and Aden aboard Hired Troopship (HT) Neuralia.
