Family History

Samuel Smith was born in 1891 at Moorgreen and was the son of William Smith a colliery labourer of Manse Cottage Moorgreen Nottinghamshire. His father was born in 1854 at King's Newton, Derbyshire and had 11 children, 3 of whom died prior to 1911. His children all born at Moorgreen were Harry b1884, Clara b1889, Samuel b1891, Richard b1893, Emma b1895, Eliza b1896, Walter b1898 and Anne b1899. In the 1911 census the family are living at Moorgreen village and are shown as William 57 yrs a colliery labourer at Moorgreen colliery, he shown as a widow, he is living with his children, Clara 22 yrs working as a housekeeper for her father, and also Samuel 20 yrs a coal miner, Richard 18 yrs a coal miner, Elizabeth 15 yrs no occupation listed, Walter 13 yrs a scholar and Anne 12 yrs a scholar.

Military History

Rifleman Samuel Smith enlisted on 10th September 1914 at Nottingham, he gave his age as 23 yrs and 297 days and his occupation as that of a coal miner. His address was Manse Cottage, Moorgreen, Nottinghamshire and his next of kin was William Smith his father of the same address. He was posted to the King's Royal Rifle Corps and joined them at their barracks at Winchester on 13th September 1914. He landed in France on 30th July 1915 and was wounded, a gun shot wound to his leg on 15th August 1916. He returned to his battalion 13th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps when fit and was killed in action on 29th September 1917. He is buried at Reservoir Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium
