John Oakes was born in 1896 at Hill Top, Eastwood and was the son of William a coal miner loader and Elizabeth Oakes née Rigley of Castle Street, Hill Top, Eastwood. His father William was born in 1849 in Staffordshire, his mother Elizabeth Rigley was born in 1874 at Hill Top, they were married in 1891 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have the following children, William b1892, John b1896, Harry b1899, Amy b1901 and Herbert b1905 all were born at Hill Top. In the 1911 census the family are living at Castle Street, Hill Top, Eastwood and are shown as William 62 yrs a coal miner loader, he is living with his wife Elizabeth 37 yrs and their children, William 19 yrs a coal miner hewer, John 15 yrs a coal miner ganger, Harry 12 yrs a scholar, Amy 10 yrs a scholar and Herbert 6 yrs of age. William stated he had been married for 20 yrs and had 7 children 2 of whom had died.
Corporal John Oakes enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 11th battalion King's Royal Rifle Corps, he landed in France on 21st July 1915. He was killed in action on 30th November 1917, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial panel 9.
