Matthew Clifton was born in 1888 at Newthorpe Common and was the son of William a coal miner hewer and Hannah Clifton of The Common Newthorpe Nottinghamshire His father William was born in 1858 at Greasley, his mother Hannah was born in 1857 also at Greasley, they were married C1887 and had the following children all born in Greasley, Matthew b1888, William b1890, Dvid b1892 Elizabeth b1894 and James b1895. in the 1911 census the family are living at Newthorpe Common and are shown as William 53 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Hannah 54 yrs and their children, Matthew 22 yrs a colliery labourer above ground, William 20 yrs a colliery labourer above ground David 19 yrs a colliery labourer above ground Elizabeth 17 yrs a domestic servant and James 16 yrs a colliery labourer above ground . William stated on the census that he had been married for 23 yrs and had 5 children.
Private Matthew Clifton attested on 28th February 1916 at Hucknall. giving his age as 27 yrs and 6 months his address was Newthorpe Common, he was a colliery banksman and his next of kin was his father William of the same address, He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for was on 11th April 1916 and posted to the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He landed in France on 9th July 1916 and on 9th August 1916 was wounded, a gun shot wound to his head. He was treated at the General Hospital at Rouen and returned to his battalion 17th Sherwood Foresters on 1st September 1916. He was again wound a gun shot wound to his leg and arm on 7th September 1916 but once again returned to duty on 15th September 1916. He was killed in action on 9th October 1916 and is buried in Regina Trench Cemetery, Grandcourt, France.
