William Camm was born in 1890 at Newthorpe and was the youngest son of Henry a coal miner and Alice Robinson Camm née Lilly of Stamford Street Newthorpe Nottinghamshire. His father Henry was born in 1849 at Brinsley, his mother Alice Robinson Lilley was born in 1850 at Cossall she died in 1905 aged 54 yrs, they were married in 1872 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district , they went on to have the following children all of whom were born in Greasley , John William b1872, George b1874, Thomas b1875, Alice b1877, Elizabeth b1881, Harry b1882, James b1884 and William b1890 In the 1911 census the family are living at Stanford Street, Newthorpe and are shown as Henry Camm 62 yrs a widow and coal miner, he is living with his children, William 20 yrs a school teacher and Elizabeth 31 yrs no occupation listed. William was educated at Beauvale School and was a contemporary there of DH Lawrence. Also like Lawrence Camm became a pupil teacher attending the Ilkeston and Nottingham centres. He subsequently taught in schools at Worksop, Beeston and Shipley before being obliged through a throat infection to seek other employment.
Corporal William Camm enlisted at Nottingham on 8th September 1914, he gave his ager as 24 yrs and 35 days, he was a coal miner and lived at Newthorpe Common, his next of kin was his father Henry of the same address. He was posted to the Rifle Brigade and joined them at Winchester on 10th September 1914. He landed with his battalion in France on 21st July 1915 and was promoted to Corporal on 8th September 1916. He was killed in action on 7th October 1916 and having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, Somme, France.
