Wilfred Bolton was born in 1892 at Greasley and was the son Charles Bolton a colliery blacksmith and the late Mary Elizabeth Bolton, née Birkin of Beauvale Newthorpe Nottinghamshire. His father Charles was born in 1863 at Market Deeping, Lincolnshire and his mother Mary Elizabeth Birkin was born in 1865 at Newthorpe, she died in 1917 aged 52 yrs, they were married in 1884 their marriage was recorded in the Basford Registration District, they went on to have four children Sydney b1885 Greasley, William Arthur b1886 Newthorpe, Edgar b1889 Newthorpe and Wilfred b1892 Newthorpe. In the 1911 census the family are living at Beauvale, Newthorpe and are shown as Charles Bolton 48 yrs married a colliery worker he is living with his children William Arthur 24 yrs a coal miner, Edgar 22 yrs a colliery clerk and Wilfred 19 yrs a colliery clerk. (His mother Mary Elizabeth is not listed at the address - unable to locate on the 1911 census) His probate was proven (with will) on 27th May 1919 at Nottingham and shows him as Wilfred Bolton of Beauvale, Newthorpe Nottingham, Private in H.M Army died 17th September 1918 in France, his effects of £143 5 shillings and 5 pence were left to Edgar Bolton a colliery clerk.
Private Wilfred Bolton, enlisted at Hucknall and served with the 7/8th Battalion King's Own Scottish Borderers, he was killed in action during a daylight trench raid on 17th September 1918. He is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
His brother William Arthur Bolton also served during the 'Great War' he attested on 2nd February 1916 at Hucknall he gave his age as 29 yrs and 5 months and his occupation as that of a musician and his address as 4 Little Lane, Kimberley he was married to Lizzie Bolton née Walker. He served in the Sherwood Foresters Territorial Battalion and does not appear to have seen overseas service. He was discharged on 25th Janaury 1919 being no longer fit for military service.
