Reginald Bentley known as Roy was born in 1898 at Newthorpe Common and was the son of Robert a coal miner hewer and Emma (Fanny) Bentley née Lane of Newthorpe Meadows Newthorpe Nottinghamshire. His father Robert was born in 1857 at Newthorpe Common, his mother Emma Lane was born in 1864 at Gotham, they were married in 1882 their marriage was recorded in the Basford registration district, they went on to have 12 children, sadly 5 were to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were, George b1883, Arthur b1887, Ada b1887, Elsie b1889, Reginald b1898, Sam b1900, Cyril b1902, Albert b1904 and Harry b196 all were born in Newthorpe Common. In the 1911 census the family are living at Grey Street, Newthorpe and are shown as Robert 54 yrs a coal miner hewer, he is living with his wife Emma 47 yrs and their children Reginalf 13 yrs a scholar, Sam 11 yrs a scholar, Cyril 9 yrs a scholar, Albert 7 yrs and Harry 5 yrs of age.
Gunner Reginald Bentley enlisted at Ilkeston on 23rd October 1915, and drafted to France on June 3rd. He was hospitalised in Tewksbury with an ankle shrapnel wound. He was killed by shell fire on 10th May 1917 and is buried at Tilloy British Cemetery, Tilloy-Les-Moff Laines, France.
