Joseph Bernard Smith was born in 1882 at Leicester and was the son of Carriss Smitha lamp lighter and Annie Smith née Beardon of Station Road, Cossall. His father Carriss was born on 7th July 1851 at Weston by Welland, Northamptonshire and died in 1914, his mother Annie Beardon was born in 1852 at Leicester and died in 1903, they were married in 1880 at Leicester and went on to have the following children, Samuel Carriss b1880, joseph Benjamin b1882, Florence Hannah b1883, Mary b1885, Beatrice Annie b1886, Mabel Francis b1888, Adelaide Louisa b1891 and Emma Rudchuff b1893. In the 1911 census the family are living at Middleton Street, Ilkeston Junction and are shown as Joseph Benjamin 29 yrs a a baker he is living with his siblings Mary 26 yrs a housekeeper, Adelaide 20 yrs a hosiery hand, Emma 18 yrs a lace mender, also living at the house is their widowed father Carriss Smith 59 yrs a lamp lighter, however he is listed as a boarder.
Private Joseph Benjamin Smith attested at Ilkeston on 28th February 1916 , he gave his age as 34 yrs and 2 months, his address as 1 Middleton Street, Ilkeston Junction and his occupation as that of a baker, his next of kin was his brother Samuel Carriso Smith of Waterway Street, Nottingham. He was posted to the reserves and mobilised for war on 25th March 1916, however he was found medically unfit and posted back to the reserves, he was remobilised on 24th February 1917 and was posted to the Army Service Corps. He served on the home front until 4th October 1918 when he embarked at Southampton and disembarked at Kantara, Egypt on 25th October 1918, he was posted to the 37th field bakery on 31st December 1918. On the 18th April 1919 he was admitted to hospital dangerously ill with a hernia and died on 20th April 1919 of a strangled hernia. He is buried in Beirut War Cemetery 275
