Family History

Frederick Smith was born in 1886 at Hyson Green and was the son of Thomas a coal miner and Alice Smith née Saxton of 8 Mansfield Road, Pleasley Hill, Mansfield. His father Thomas was born in 1863 in Normaton, Derbyshire and his mother Alice Saxton was born in 1863 at Heanor, Derbyshire, they were married in 1885 in Nottingham and went on to have the following children, Frederick b1886 Radford, Ethel b1888 Radford, Annie b1890 Radford, Alice b1892 Radford, Wilfred b1897 New Houghton and Ernest b1900 New Houghton. Frederick married his wife Alice Elizabeth Carlin on 25th Decemebr 1907 at the parish church at Pleasley, they went on to have a son Sidney born 1910 at New Houghton. they lived at 162 New Houghton, Pleasley. In the 1911 census his parents are living at 8 Mansfield Road, Pleasley Hill Mansfield and are shown as Thomas 48 yrs he is living with his wife Alice 48 yrs and their children Ethel 23 yrs a dress maker, Annie 21yrs a dress maker, Alice 19 yrs a mill hand, Wilfred 14 yrs a coal miner and Ernest 11 yrs. In the same 1911 census Frederick and his family are living at 162 New Houghton, Pleasley and are shown as Fred 25 yrs a coal miner, he is living with his wife Alice Elizabeth 25 yrs and their son Sidney 10 months of age

Military History

Rifleman Frederick Smith enlisted at Ilkeston whilst residing at Pinxton, he served with the 13th battalion Rifle Brigade. He was killed in action on 12th September 1918 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Vis-En-Artois Memorial France, panel 10
