Family History

George Rowland was born in 1891 the son of George Rowland a lace maker and Eliza Straw, (née Hill). His parents were born at Nottingham in 1864. Married in 1889, they had four children - Annie b.1887 in Nottingham, George Rowland b.1891 Ilkeston, Louisa b.1896 Nottingham and Beatrice b.1898 in Nottingham. I 1911, they lived at 41, Denison Street, Beeston. Annie was a cotton winder, Louisa a lace winder and Beatrice a scholar. George was serving in India in 1911.

Military History

George Rowland Straw enlisted at Nottingham on 7th October 1908 in India from 20th September 1910 until 2nd October 1914 when they were returned to England. He landed in France on 4th November 1914 and he died at 1.15am 1st February 1915 at the 13th General Hospital, France of mastoiditis . He is buried in Boulogne Eastern Cemetery, Grave Reference: III B 81
