Family History

Mathew William Grandorge was born in 1883 at Balderton and was the son of Richard a shop keeper and Charlotte Grandorge née Cree of Westbourne Villas, Balderton. His father Richard was born in 1843 at Conoley, Yorkshire he died in 1911 at Balderton and his mother Charlotte Cree was born in 1845 at Farndon, they were married in 23rd June 1866 at Balderton and went on to have 6 children, sadly one was to die in infancy or early childhood, their children were Alice Jane b1867, Frances b1870 John Cree b1872, Richard Ernest 1874, Mary Emily b1878 and Matthew William b1883 all were born in Balderton. Matthew William married his wife Ann Elizabeth Vessey in 1909 at Newark and went on to have the following children, Richard William Vessey born 1910, John Mathew Barker b1911 Elizabeth b1914 and Dora b1916 (died 1916) they lived at Main St., Balderton. In the 1911 census Matthew and his family are living at Westbourne House, Balderton and are shown as Matthew William 28 yrs a cycle dealer and repairer, he is living with his wife Ann Elizabeth 24 yrs and their son Richard William Vessey 9 months old. In the same 1911 census his parents are living at Westbourne Villas, Balderton and are shown as Richard 68 yrs a shop keeper he is living with his wife Charlotte 6 yrs and their daughter Alice Jane 43 yrs a mothers help.

Military History

Private Matthew William Grandorge enlisted at Newark and initially served with the service number 201386 in the Army Service Corps. He was serving with the 6th battalion South Wales Borderers when he was killed in action on 9th April 1918 , having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Hainaut, Belgium.
