Arthur Ernest Gerald Tillin was born in 1898 at Arlesey , Bedfordshire and was the son of Arthur Ernest John a engine turner and Mary Ann Eliza Tillin née Street of 28 Milton Street, Balderton, Newark. His father Arthur was born in 1869 at Walthamstow, London and his mother Mary Ann Eliza Street was born in 1877 at Arlesey, they were married in 1895 at Biggleswade and went on to have the following children, Gladys Irene b1897, Arthur Ernest Gerald b1898, Hector b1901, Ethel b1904 and Edward b1908 all were born in Arlesey, Ralph b1910 Balderton, Patrick 1914 Newark and Sydney b1917 Newark. In the 1911 census the family are living at 4 Smith Street, Balderton and are shown as Arthur 42 yrs, he is living with his wife Mary Ann 34 yrs and their children, Gladys Irene 14 yrs at home, Ernest 13 yrs a scholar, Hector 19 yrs a scholar, Ethel 7 yrs a scholar, Edward 3 yrs and Ralph 1 year of age.

Military History

Private Arthur Ernest Gerald Tillin enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Newark. He served with the 1st battalion Leicestershire Regiment. He was killed in action on 8th October 1918 and is buried at Montbrehain British Cemetery, Aisne, France.
