John Henry Whitehad (junior) was born in 1896 in Balderton, Newark, he was the son of John Henry Whitehead (senior) a plaster pit labourer and Grace Whitehead née Smith of Ena Terrace Pinfold Lane Balderton Newark. His father John Henry (snr) was born in 1867 in Orston, Nottinghamshire and his mother Grace Smith was also born in 1867 in Radcliffe on Soar, Derbyshire, they went on to get married in 1894 in Newark and had 5 children 1 of whom was to die in infancy prior to 1911, their surviving children were all born in Balderton were : John Henry b1896, Gladys Ellen b1902, Ernest Evelyn b1904 and James Harold Whitehead b1906. In the 1911 census the family are living at Pinfold Lane Balderton and are shown as John Henry 44 yrs a plaster pit labourer, he is living with his wife Grace 44 yrs and their children, John Henry 15 yrs a bakers apprentice, Gladys Ellen 9 yrs, Ernest Evelyn 7 yrs and James Harold 5 yrs.
Private John Henry Whitehead enlisted 10th November 1914 in Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Froesters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment. He landed in France on 26th June 1915 and was killed in action on 8th June 1917, he is buried in Loos British Cemetery Grave Reference: XIX B 5
Article published 30th June 1917 in the Newark Herald :- Son of Mr & Mrs John Henry Whitehead of Pinfold Lane, Balderton. Learned the baking at Mr Dickinson’s, Castlegate and was there about four years. He then went to Messrs. Simpson and Co., Lowfield Works. Enlisted in the Notts & Derby Territorials on Nov.10th, 1914 and was in training till the 26th June, 1915, then went to France. Killed in action, had only returned to France on June 2nd, after ten days leave. He was at his post with his Lewis gun team and hit by a piece of shell in the head. He was unconscious from the time he was hit and died some few mintutes later.
