Family History

Arthur Walsham was born in 1887 at Horncastle, both his parents died prior to him enlisting, his next of kin and adopted parents were his uncle and aunt William and Jane Starmer of Chapel Lane, Ludborough Road, Lincolnshire .

Military History

Private Arthur Walsham enlisted at Newark on 28th September 1914 , he gave his age as 26 yrs and 10 months , he was a foundry labourer working for Simpson Company, he was posted to the 8th battalion Sherwood Foresters. He embarked from Southampton on 5th June 1915 and joined his battalion in the field on the 10th June 1915. He was killed in action on 14th August 1915, having no known grave his name is commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium.

Article published in the local Newark press following his death :- Nephew of Jane Starmer, Chapel Lane, Ludborough, North Thoresby, Lincolnshire. Enlisted 27th Sept. 1914, resided in Main Street, Balderton and employed as foundry labourer at Messrs. Simpsons. On 28th Sept. 1914 accepted into 8th Sherwood Foresters and went to France on the 5th June 1915.
