Family History

Samuel Freeman was born in 1882 at Long Eaton, he was the son of Elijah Freeman and Mary Ann Freeman. Samuel married Mary Butcher (born 31st October 1882 at Beeston) on 21st May 1904 at St John’s Beeston, they lived at 30 William Terrace, Wilson Street, Beeston they had the following children, Samuel Arthur born 10th February 1905, George William born 2nd April 1906, Elsie May born 9th May 1907, Millicent born 17th January 1909, Beatrice Mary born 14th February 1910 and John born 1st July 1913. In the 1911 census the family are living at 36 Lower Regent Street, Beeston, Samuel 29 yrs is an iron foundry labourer, he is living with his wife Mary 27 yrs and their children, Arthur 6 yrs, George William 5 yrs, Elsie May 3 yrs, Millicent 2 yrs and Beatrice 1 year old, Commencing 24th April 1916 his widow was awarded a pension of 26 shillings and six pence a week.

Military History

Private Samuel Freeman enlisted at Nottingham whilst residing at Beeston, he served with the 11th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment, landing in France on 22nd September 1915. He was accidentally killed on 9th October 1915 on a bombing school course, he is buried at Erquinghem-Lys Churchyard Extension, France. Plot 1. Row E. Grave 14.
