Albert was born in 1894 at Hunslett, Leeds and was the son of Jack a moulder and Annie Mawson nee Wood of 7 Hawton Lane, Balderton. His father Jack was born in 1858 at Leeds and his mother Annie Wood was born in 1863 at Berkshire, they were married in 1883 at St Saviours, London and went on to have the following children, Emily b1886 London, Harry b1888 London Frederick b1890 London, Albert b1894 Leeds, Walter b1888 Leeds (killed in action 26/9/1918), and Sidney Mawson. In the 1911 census the family are living at 7 Hawton Lane Balderton, they are shown as Jack 53 years a moulder, he is living with his wife Annie 48 yrs and their children, Harry 23 yrs a moulder, Albert 17 yrs a fitter, Walter 13 yrs a scholar and Sidney 11 yrs a scholar.
Private Albert Mawson enlisted at Newark and served with the 1/8th battalion Sherwood Foresters Regiment. he landed in France on 2nd March 1915. He was killed in action on 22nd June 1917 and is buried at Loos British Cemetery Grave Reference: XIX A 17
His brother Private Walter Mawson enlisted at Newark, he lied about his age as he was only 16 years old. He initially served with the service number 2905 in the Sherwood Foresters Regiment. He was invalided home with pleurisy and when he recovered he returned to France. Serving with the 42nd battalion Machine Gun Corps, he was killed in action by a shell splinter to the head. He is buried at Bertincourt Chateau British Cemetery, Pas de Calais, France. Article published in the Newark Herald on 7th July 1917 :- Son of Mr & Mrs Mawson, 7 Hawton Lane, New Balderton. Worked at Messrs. Simpsons prior to enlisting in the local regiment, Sept. 1914 and went to France in March 1915. After twelve months active service was wounded in the hand and was in hospital in England. He went out again to France in Feb. 1916 and has been there ever since. Killed early on the morning of 22nd June. Only just going into the trenches when the Germans started to send over rifle grenades and one fell beside him. Mr & Mrs Mawson’s four sons have been or are serving. The eldest, Pte Harry Mawson, was wounded in the shoulder in Aug. 1916 and discharged. L/Cpl Fred Mawson, who was on the reserve at the outbreak of war and has been a prisoner in Germany since Oct. 1914. Pte Walter Mawson, killed 1918. Also, son-in-law, Pte J. Shaw, Sherwood Foresters, now in France.
