Family History

John Samuel Cox was born on 14th July 1880 at Beeston, he was baptised on 14th August 1881 at St John’s Church Beeston, he was the son of John and Jane Cox née Newcombe of 12 Evelyn Street, Beeston. His father John was born in 1850 at Beeston, his mother Jane Newcombe was born in 1851 at Shelford, they were married on 19th August 1873 at St John’s church Beeston they went on to have 8 children, sadly 3 were to die in infancy or early childhood. In the 1911 census his parents are living at 15 Granville Street, Long Eaton, John 61 yrs a lace maker, he is living with his wife Jane 60 yrs and their daughter Harriett 26 yrs a lace hand. In the same 1911 census we find John 30 yrs a foreman living at 16 Gladstone Street, Beeston, he is living with his wife Jane Ann 30 yrs and their children, George Thomas 3 yrs and Edward 1 year old, John gave information on the census that he had been married for 7 years and had 7 children, 5 of whom had died in infancy or early childhood. It however has been found that John married Jane Anne Wood (born 14th September 1880) on 1st June 1915 at St John’s Church, Beeston. His pension record card shows his widow Jane Anne was awarded a pension of 17 shillings and 6 pence a week, for herself and two children, Edward, born 25th January 1910 (born before wedlock) and Walter Cyril born 20th March 1916, which was to commence 22nd May 1916, his widow later re married to become Jane Anne Everley and lived at 15 Victoria Terrace, Portland Street, Beeston.

Military History

Private John Cox enlisted at Nottingham, he served with the 3rd battalion Grenadier Guards, he was killed in action on 9th October 1915, his name is commemorated on the Loos Memorial, Dud corner.
